Not so long ago i was at a party with group of people very interested in environmental issues. During the evening the topic of rising sea levels came up. So what did i propose?.....move the ice! Then i started rambling like a mad man. My basic idea was to create rocket ships that could carry icebergs to the moon. When on the moon these could be melted to form lakes and begin a process of making the moon habitable. Consider it a noah's arc for if we finally do destroy the earth.
There are some interesting ideas in this clip. It is just a shame she is such a bad presenter

Humanizing products
I have been involved in several discussions about humanizing products. An important and often overlooked aspect is how we as humans should feel about machines that show characteristics of life. Take this test and see how you feel.
1. Watch this youtube clip from the movie office space.
2. Now watch this clip
So how did you feel about the office space clip? Satisfied, overjoyed, happy
.......and the Elmo clip?

A true human interface
If only we could put tiny people in our digital products, hang on wait a minute.

Dabbling in the dark art....Typography
Yesterday i was dabbling in the dark art of typography. Eventhough i am not a master sorcerer i now have a better understanding of the craft, and a lot of questions. One that keeps bounding in my mind (and it might be really silly) is why can't i control the size of ascenders and descenders? Take the following example. I am working on a headline that is a mix of 2 different typefaces garamond and myriad.
I have scaled them so the centres of the letters align (sorry i am not down with all the terminology)

But as you can see the ascenders and descenders (getting more down with the lingo) don't align.

Why don't i have the possibilty to align them? Just a click of a button. I realise that it alters the typeface but shouldn't it be an option for the designer? Surely this is easier that hunting down typefaces that have been designed to complement each other.
As i mentioned earlier, i am not a sorcerer of the dark art and this may just be a ridiculous suggestion.

The x10 mini twins have landed
Ok, like many other Sony Ericsson designers i am going to shamelessly promote the x10 mini twins on my blog. These devices went down a storm last week in Barcelona. For those (like me) who are lucky enough to already have one, it is no surprise. The Sony Ericsson x10 mini and mini pro are amazing devices. I take my hat off to everyone involved. The hardwork and determination really paid off. Well done!
There is no place like home: TAT home
The guys and girls from TAT do it again. Sleek graphics, nice transitions and a funky beat. Great inspiration. Well done!

Darwin was an aquatic ape
Could it really be true. I am not to sure about the argument about streamlining. I slip through the water like a greased up otter, but down my local pool others carve the water like stampeding elephants.
